Adult Day Health Care
Adult Day Health Care not only means quality care and social interaction for adults with physical and cognitive impairments, it means respite for caregivers. This service is provided at the council’s 2,500 sq. ft. adult day health care center. The center is licensed by the State of Florida and is the only facility of its kind in the area.
Located at the Council on Aging complex at 875 Royce Street, the center boast a well lit living room area for relaxing complete with floral sofas, chairs, wooded furniture, game table and television; a fully functional eat-in kitchen with adjoining washer and dryer area; a large multi-purpose room for activities; a screened in porch with ceiling fans and outdoor furniture; a fenced in backyard with gardening area and picnic tables; and a state-of-the-art relaxation therapy. Relaxation therapy utilizes soft lights, gentle music, and calming aromas to offer participants a multi-sensory experience in a peaceful soothing environment. Originally developed as a treatment for children and adults with disabilities, new research shows it is an effective tool for easing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
In addition to noontime meals and afternoon snacks, participants receive health monitoring and assistance with taking medication from licensed health care professionals who receive continuous training in areas such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The center maintains a staff to client ratio of 1:6 in accordance with state of Florida licensing requirements. Staff members and volunteers also supervise stimulating therapeutic activities and field trips.
The center operates from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. To enroll, a potential participant must complete an assessment with the director of the center and return with a completed physician’s admission order (click to download) and a $25 deposit. The center is open to both Adult day health care service is available through funded programs and on a private pay basis at hourly rates much lower than those charged for in-home care.
