Many family caregivers take on the challenges of caregiving alone. However, caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's or other dementia is not easy. Not only can it be overwhelming to take care of a loved one with cognitive impairments, too much stress can be harmful to both of you. To help ease the burden of caregiving, we offer our adult day care center as an option for both the participant and the caregiver as well as caregiver support groups, which provide caregivers the opportunity to share experiences with peers in similar circumstances.
Council on Aging of West Florida's Adult Day Care Center is a licensed adult day care center. The center provides a protective, stimulating environment for older adults with physical and cognitive impairments and respite for caregivers.
Positive outcomes for participants include increased interaction with peers and socialization, improved, happier moods and behavior, greater sense of purpose in life, improved sleep habits, greater independence and increased motivation.
The center maintains a staff to participant ratio of 1:6 in accordance with State of Florida licensing requirements. The staff receives on-going training in areas such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The center is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
The newly expanded and renovated 3,000 sq. ft. center, located at 875 Royce Street in Pensacola, is designed for indoor and outdoor activities in a variety of settings. The center has comfortable and inviting activity areas, functional recreation areas, a full kitchen, a screened in porch with ceiling fans and outdoor furniture, a private backyard with a pavilion and walking paths, and a relaxation room.
The center's daily routine includes breakfast, lunch, a snack, outside walks, exercise class, arts & crafts, table games, sports, card games, mental stimulation, special parties and celebrations and as well as regularly scheduled field trips to picnic areas, parks, museums, historical places, area attractions, bowling alleys and movie theatres. These well-supervised trips are not only fun, but trigger memories and promote socialization.
Those not eligible for government funded programs may attend the center on a private pay basis at daily rates much lower than those charged for in-home care.
